Resources for Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month and alliance with the Black Lives Matter movement, we’ve compiled a list of resources for you to support the Black community. The year of 2020 has taught us that racism is still present in society and we must unite to fight the discrimination the Black community face.
Educate Yourself on Systemic Racism
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
Alexander uncovers the incredibly sad truth behind the criminal justice system and how systemic racism is the root issue of racial inequality in the United States. This book discusses the intertwine between race, racism, and incarceration with shocking statistics. Her book has empowered many to spread awareness about systemic racism and develop ways to make a change.

13th Directed by Ava DuVernay
In this 2016 documentary directed by Ava DuVernay, the film centers around race, justice, and mass incarnation (same topics as Michelle Alexander’s book).
She walks us through the history of slavery and segregation is explored to better understand how systemic racism has impacted society decades later.
The title of the film came from the 13th amendment which states “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Slavery still exists in the form of mass incarceration since Black Americans are disproportionately more likely to be incarcerated.
